Warrior

Executed in 2011, Warrior is a seminal exposition of Varriano’s development of Abstract Crystalism. Presented in flattened, manifold shapes, sharpened edges, bold lines and brilliant color, Varriano’s painting is a pivotal, inimitable progression of Abstract Cubism.

The powerful pose and compendious symbolism of this mythical Armageddon angel commands attention — protector, avenger, noble warrior, and messenger — the viewer is drawn into the magnificence, majesty, and otherworldliness of the subject. Varriano gives us a being of rich, complex layers. So very different from ourselves, yet not so much so that we cannot see a portion of our own power and pining for justice, or lack thereof, reflected.

The strong, muscular physique speaks of regal, godly strength; the large, central, singular eye declares immutable focus and discipline; and the blowing of the shofar calls us to jubilee. With Varriano, all the elements in his paintings ripple with overt and nuanced meaning — Warrior wields a short sword, symbolic of power, bravery, and honor, pointed downward it intimates the battle is won, the sacred scroll, flowing forth from the mouth, ushers proclamations of victory, and the conspicuous vermillion heart reminds us of the chivalrous creed that a warrior must possess an intelligent, compassionate nature, for the greatest warriors engage justly and commit themselves to winning before the battle begins. 

Characteristic of Varriano’s work, there is a tactile, textured application of paint and an eccentric, unrestrained use of shapes that communicate movement and life. Standing solid and firm, the angel appears to occupy tectonic space in this realm, but there is the suggestion that he may inhabit inter-dimensional firmaments as well. Perhaps the actual space Warrior occupies is the greater and loftier world that endures in the hidden, yet accessible, folds within. In his subtle way, Varriano rouses us to what is remarkable, exceptional, and possible when humans encounter and converse with divine forces.
